The Strawberryfield Pancake Cottage

Our Story

Our little cottage on the Ring of Kerry has stood for over 200 years, overlooking the stunning Slievaduff Valley. Once home to the Downing family (pictured on the right), it lay empty for seven years before Peter and Margaret Kerssens brought it back to life in 1997.

Originally a small café serving sandwiches and dinners, everything changed in 2004 when they decided to focus on Dutch-style pancakes, using Margaret’s mother’s cherished recipe. It turned out to be the best idea they ever had.

Today, The Strawberryfield Pancake Cottage draws visitors from near and far for our sweet and savoury pancakes, cosy cottage charm, and welcoming atmosphere. Still family-run, Mayra now carries on the tradition with the same love and care her parents began, while her sister Yosta built this very website!

Our Pancakes

At The Strawberry Field, every pancake is freshly made to order using Margaret’s mother’s cherished recipe, passed down through three generations. Just the basics done beautifully: eggs, flour and milk, whisked with care and a touch of love.

We cater for all tastes and dietary needs too, whether you’re after egg-free, gluten-free or dairy-free, we’ll prepare your batter fresh to order. Just let our friendly staff know, and they’ll be delighted to accommodate you.

Each pancake is cooked to perfection, topped with the freshest ingredients, and decorated with an artistic flair that makes every plate a little work of art.

Sweet or savoury, simple or indulgent, and if you really want to treat yourself, why not add a scoop of creamy vanilla ice cream on top!

What Else Is on the Menu?

It’s not just about pancakes (though they do steal the show). We also serve our traditional Dutch apple pie which is home-baked using an old family recipe from Holland, with plenty of cinnamon, sugar and love.

You’ll also find freshly baked scones, served the classic way with jam, butter and a generous dollop of whipped cream.

If you’d like to start with something savoury, try our homemade soup of the day, which is always vegetable-based and suitable for vegans and vegetarians. It’s served with fresh Irish soda bread, with a gluten-free option available on request.

For something sweet and refreshing, our strawberry sundae and homemade strawberry lemonade are local favourites.

And for coffee lovers, our extensive menu features Giuljano coffee, which is a small Italian brand known for its rich, smooth flavour. It’s made even better with our pure natural spring water, drawn straight from our own well.

Comforting, homemade and full of flavour, just the way it should be!
