Our pancake cottage is over 200 years old and has been run by Peter & Margaret Kerssens since 1997.
The old dormer cottage was originally a family farmhouse, located on a sidetrack on the famous Ring of Kerry overlooking Slievaduff Valley. The area is a favourite with tourists and locals alike.
Peter & Margaret turned the cottage into a little café/restaurant creating the space themselves as they have a great love for cooking and creating things. Keeping the traditional Irish cottage-style which makes it a cosy and homely restaurant, with a welcoming wood burning stove but with modern facilities.
The cottage has its own well, so there is no chloride in the water system, just pure natural filtered spring water.
The little art & craft shop is another aspect of “The Strawberry Field”. The crafts are all by local artists, including items created by Peter and Margaret’s paintings and crafts.
All of the pancakes at “The Strawberry Field” are freshly made to order. Margaret has her own pancake recipe, using the basic ingredients like eggs, flour and milk.
Also, there are plenty of options for special dietary requirements. Egg free, gluten free, dairy free, you name it! These batters are also prepared to order so just let the waiting staff know and they’d be more than happy to accommodate you.
Great attention is paid to the freshness of the pancake toppings, everything is assembled at the time the pancake is cooked and are decorated with the most beautiful ingredients.
The artistic and well decorated pancake-toppings are also related to the paintings displayed in the restaurant, another creative side from the chef.
Along with Pancakes there is also Dutch apple-pie available, which is home-baked using a traditional recipe from Holland using cinnamon and sugar. There are homemade scones as well, deliciously served with jam, butter and freshly whipped cream.
But why not start with a lovely homemade soup of the day which is always vegetable based and suitable for vegans and vegetarians. The soup of the day is served with freshly baked artisan local bread, from “Harringtons” Kenmare. There is also gluten free bread available on request.
ACRYLIC PAINTINGS AND MIXED MEDIA ON CANVAS
The paintings are created by the proprietor and chef of The Strawberry Field. They are acrylic on canvas and some of them are mixed media, using a mix of melted wax and acrylic. The Irish landscape paintings are inspired by the local surroundings of County Kerry. Margaret has been painting for over 30 years and has a deep love of art.
The stones are collected from the local Kerry beaches, they are all different in shapes, colours and sizes. With a candle on top, these stone creations give a beautiful atmosphere in your home.
